Historical background

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - PHILIP PHILADELPHUS

(93-83 BC)

Philip Philadelphe, the son of Antiochus VIII, had to fight against Antiochus X (94-83 AC.) and successively lost his three brothers Antiochus XI, Demetrius III and Antiochus XII by fighting against the son of Cyzicene. He was finally driven out by the population of Antioch, tired of the perpetual Seleucid dynastic wars and replaced on the choice of the population by Tigranes, king of Armenia, who installed a new administration in Antioch (83-69 AC.).
