Historical background

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - DEMETRIUS III

(97/96 - 88/87 BC)

Demetrius III is one of the sons of Antiochus VIII and the brother of Antiochus XI and Philip Philadelphus. He was enthroned king in Damascus, by Ptolemy IX Lathyrus in 97/96 BC while he was in exile. He is first in conflict with the high priest Alexander Janneus. He claimed Antioch after the death of Seleucus VI, then after the death of Antiochus X. Demetrius opposed his brother Philip, but was captured by the Parthians of Mithridates II. He ends his days as a prisoner, hostage of the Parthian king.
