Commentary

Light weight. This type does not correspond at all to the description in the work Seleucid Coins (SC. 2235). The head does not appear to be radiate. However, the description of the reverse does correspond to this type, which seems much rarer than general works suggest.

Historical background

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - ALEXANDER II ZEBINA

(128-123 BC)

Alexander II Zebina claimed to be the son of Alexander I. Ptolemy VIII urged him to revolt against Demetrius II Nicator. Demetrius was defeated near Damascus and momentarily left Alexander II sole ruler of Antioch, but he soon fell out with his Egyptian protector. Ptolemy then approached Antiochus VIII and offered him his daughter Cleopatra Tryphemus in marriage. Abandoned by everyone, Alexander was finally captured and sold to Antiochus VIII who had him executed in 123 BC..
