Historical background

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - CLEOPATRA THEA and ANTIOCHUS VIII GRYPUS

(125-121 BC)

Cleopatra is the daughter of Ptolemy VI Philometor (180-145 BC) and Cleopatra, her sister. She successively married Alexander I Balas (150-145 BC), then Demetrios II (145-140 and 129-125 BC), finally Antiochus VII (138-129 BC). VS.). She had a total of eight children with these three kings. After the disappearance of Demetrius II Nicator, his eldest son, Seleucus V, succeeded him, but was assassinated at the instigation of his mother Cleopatra Thea. The second son of Demetrius and Cleopatra, Antiochus VIII Grypus then shared supreme power with his mother. After four years of this diet, Cleopatra tried to get rid of her offspring. Antiochus compelled his mother to take the poison she intended for him.
