Historical background

SWITZERLAND - REPUBLIC OF GENEVA

(1536-1798)

Geneva experienced serious social unrest on the eve of the French Revolution. In 1790, the inhabitants, deprived of political rights, revolted and ended up seizing power: they proclaimed the equality of all citizens in December 1792. On 23 Germinal year VI (April 12, 1798), the Helvetic Republic was founded and on 26 Germinal (April 15, 1798), the French occupied Geneva, which was attached on the following 7 Floréal (April 26, 1798) and became the capital of the Léman department..
