En 1638, des colons suèdois s’embarque sur le “Kalmar Nyckel” et fondent sur l’embouchure du fleuve Delaware, la colonie de Nouvelle-Suède (Nya Sverige). Cette colonie est centrée autour de Fort Christina fondé par Peter Minuit. La Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes occidentales n’accepte pas cette concurrence et en 1655, Pieter Stuyvesant à la tête de 300 soldats attaque la colonie. Les 500 colons scandinaves furent intégrés à la colonie néerlandaise de Nouvelle-Amsterdam (New York)..
In 1638, Swedish settlers boarded the Kalmar Nyckel and founded the colony of New Sweden (Nya Sverige) at the mouth of the Delaware River. This colony was centered around Fort Christina, founded by Peter Minuit. The Dutch West India Company did not accept this competition, and in 1655, Pieter Stuyvesant, leading 300 soldiers, attacked the colony. The 500 Scandinavian settlers were incorporated into the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (New York).
