SWITZERLAND - REPUBLIC OF BERN

(1353-1798)

Bern joined the Reformation in 1528. It supported Geneva against the Duke of Savoy and occupied the Pays de Vaud in 1536. The government was in the hands of the patriciate. The conspiracy of Hentzi, in 1749, of democratic essence is crushed in blood. The French seize the canton of Bern on March 5, 1798.
