Pendant deux siècles, la Suisse a exporté des mercenaires, considérés comme les meilleurs soldats d’Europe. La France en fit usage et doubla cet accord commercial d’un accord politique destiné à éviter que les Suisses ne fournissent des contingents à des ennemis de la FranceL'alliance de la France avec la Confédération Hélvétique ayant expiré depuis douze ans, on jugea à propos de la confirmer par un nouvel accord signé le 4 décembre 1663 à Soleure.

France made use of it and doubled this commercial agreement with a political agreement intended to prevent the Swiss from providing contingents to enemies of France The Helvetic Republic imposed by the French ended in 1803.
