Historical background

SWITZERLAND - CHUR - IMPERIAL CITY

(1529-1766)

Chur was an imperial city which minted coins in the name of the emperor from 1529. The bishop defended his monetary rights and continued to mint coins. On March 14, 1648, the town of Chur acquired a mill. In the 17th century, the coins of the bishop and those of the city were minted jointly in equal numbers but never on the same day. In the 18th century, the coins of these two authorities were minted at the same time using rolls bearing several different imprints. The coinage of the city ended in 1766, that of the bishop the following year.
