Historical background

SWITZERLAND - TOWNSHIP OF ST GALL

The coinage of St. Gall is divided into two distinct parts: the coinage of the Abbey of St. Gall which was founded in 947 and is one of the oldest in Switzerland and mint canton of St. Gallen . If the coinage of the abbey began in 1240, the Township does not begin until the late fourteenth century. The city of St. Gallen became free in 1357 and was separated from the abbey in 1457.
