Historical background

SWEDEN - KINGDOM OF SWEDEN - CHARLES XII

(5/04/1697-11/12/1718)

Charles XII (06/17/1682-12/11/1718), the son of Charles XI and Ulric of Denmark, succeeded his father in 1697. King at the age of 15, he proved to be a brilliant tactician in war of the North who will oppose him to Tsar Peter the Great. Charles XII first beat the Danes in Copenhagen, then the Russians in Narva on November 30, 1700. He took Warsaw in 1702, ravaged the Baltic States and then installed Stanislas Leszczynski as King of Poland in 1703, but he had to flee the next year. Charles XII was defeated at Poltava in 1709 and took refuge in Türkiye. He was killed in 1718 trying to reconquer Norway. His sister Ulrique-Éléonore succeeded him.
