Plusieurs hypothèses sont énoncées au sujet de l'étymologie du terme ping-pong. Néanmoins, l'explication la plus probable de ce mot composé serait une onomatopée dérivée du son de la balle apparue en 1884 en Extrême-Orient, de « ping », bruit du choc de la balle contre la raquette, et « pong », bruit du rebond sur la table. Le terme est devenu une marque déposée par John Jacques de Croydon en 1900 suivant certaines sources ou vers 1891 pour d'autres. En Chinois le caractère utilisés, ping et le caractère pang, sont classés dans les onomatopées, le premier utilisé pour le tir d'arme à feu, le second pour un claquement violent..
