La société russe Arktikugol exploite depuis 1931 des mines de charbon dans l’archipel du Svalbard en particulier dans les villes minières de Pyramiden (fermée en 1998) et Barentsburg. Suite à la dissolution de l’URSS, la production a décliné. A ce jour, la Russie maintient une présence même si la production est déficitaire.
The Russian company Arktikugol has been mining coal in the Svalbard archipelago since 1931, particularly in the mining towns of Pyramiden (closed in 1998) and Barentsburg. Following the dissolution of the USSR, production declined. Russia still maintains a presence today, even though production is in deficit.
