Commentary

Medal-struck type. Coin striking is rarer. This coin was struck in Oñate, a town in the Basque Country, then the headquarters of the Carlist troops. In 1833, Ferdinand VII abolished the Salic law, allowing his daughter Isabel II to succeed him. Her brother, the Infante Charles V of Bourbon, proclaimed himself king, supported by a section of the Spanish people, the “Carlists.” The Carlist pretenders would be at the origin of three wars. The last (1872-1876) was led by his grandson Charles VII against Amadeus of Savoy and then against the First Republic.

Historical background

SPAIN - CHARLES VII

Charles VII (in Castilian Carlos VII) was born on March 30, 1848 in Laibach and died on July 18, 1909 in Varese. He is a Carlist pretender to the Spanish throne. On the death of Ferdinand VII, the House of Bourbons of Spain was divided between the supporters of his daughter Isabella II and those of his brother Charles V. The latter named Carlists revolted and tried to overthrow Isabella II but also the liberals. In 1870, Isabella II was overthrown, abdicated in favor of her son and went into exile in Paris. The Cortes decide to name the Duke of Aosta Amédée de Savoie king under the name Amédée I. Returning in 1868, Charles VII established himself in Navarre where he was proclaimed king. He launched the Third Carlist War in 1872 first against Amadeus I, then against the First Republic and finally against Alfonso XII following the restoration. In 1876, Estella the Carlist capital was taken and Charles VII was condemned to exile..
