La Société Royale d'Agriculture est aujourd’hui l'académie d'agriculture de France est une association selon la loi de 1901 qui a pour mission de contribuer, dans les domaines scientifique, technique, économique, juridique, social et culturel à l’évolution de l’agriculture et du monde rural. Héritière de la société royale d'agriculture de la Généralité de Paris, fondée en 1761 par Louis XV, elle fonctionne sous sa forme actuelle depuis un décret de 1878 par lequel elle fut notamment reconnue d'utilité publique. Elle compte 120 membres titulaires et 180 correspondants français, ainsi que 60 membres étrangers. Le bureau de l'Académie, qui est son organe exécutif, compte six membres, dont le président élu pour un an et le secrétaire perpétuel élu par ses pairs et nommé par décret du président de la république.
L'académie d'agriculture attribue chaque année des prix et médailles pour récompenser des travaux contribuant à l'avancement des connaissances dans le domaine de l'agriculture.
Son siège est à Paris dans un hôtel particulier situé au 18 rue de Bellechasse dans le 7e arrondissement. Les séances s'y tiennent tous les mercredis après-midi et sont publiques.
