From June 16 to September 12, 1702 the army of the Holy Roman Empire led by Louis de Bade, margrave of Bade-Bade, besieged the fortress town of Landau, belonging to the kingdom of France. The French defenders led by the Comte de Mélac, governor of the place, resisted vigorously, but were forced to surrender after a siege of three months..
