Historical background

SICILY - SELINUS

(520-490 BC)

Selinunte was, according to Montenegro, founded in 628 BC by settlers from Megara Hyblæa (Sicily), itself a colony of Megara (Megaride, Central Greece). The city was located on the southern coast of Sicily, at the mouth of the Selinos river, in the area of Carthaginian influence. Populated by Greeks and indigenous Siceliotes, the city owes its name to the leaf which adorns the right of its staters and which is still found today in the wild state on the territory of the city and which resembles parsley..
