Commentary


Pour ce type G. Buceti a recensé vingt-trois exemplaires avec des poids compris entre 5,82 g et 8,25 g. Nous semblons bien avoir affaire à un as. Les auteurs du Roman Provincial Coinage ont recensé quarante deux exemplaires avec un poids moyen de 6,58 g et dix neuf coins de droit. Ce type aurait été frappé pendant les guerres Civiles. Le monnayage de Panorme cesse sous Tibère.

SICILY - PANORMOS

(3rd - 1st century BC)

The city of Panorme was conquered by the Romans in 254 BC Besieged by Hadrusbal in 251 BC, Lucius Caecilius Metellus defeated the Carthaginians and seized their elephants. Hamilcar Barca did try to seize the city, but without success. At the end of the Second Punic War, Panorme became an important free city, an administrative and commercial capital. The city still played an important role under Sextus Pompey. In 20 BC, Augustus settled a Roman colony on his territory.
