Historical background

SICILY - KINGDOM OF SICILY - PETER III OF ARAGON, I OF SICILY AND CONSTANTIA

(1282-1285)

Constance is the daughter of Manfredi, King of Sicily (1258-1266) and Beatrice of Savoy. She married Peter, son of James I, who ascended the throne of Aragon in 1276. Peter became King of Sicily in 1282 but was excommunicated by Pope Martin IV after the Sicilian Vespers which drove the French from Sicily. In 1283 he occupied Reggio and part of Calabria. Pierre died in 1285. His second son, Jacques, succeeded him.
