Historical background

SICILY - CAMPANIA

(344-336 BC)

For nearly three centuries, Carthaginians and Greeks, then Greeks and Romans clashed in Sicily, either directly or indirectly. All sides resorted to mercenaries, particularly Syracuse. When Timoleon arrived in Syracuse in 344 BC, the belligerents called in Campanian mercenaries who eventually settled near Entella and Aetna (Catania).
