Commentary


Même coin de revers que l’exemplaire de l’American Numismatic Society (ANS n° 398). Oliver Hoover, HGCS. 2/ p. 382, n° 1481 signale que ce type aurait été gravé par Évainète sous Dionysos Ier. Il existe en fait plusieurs variétés dont une sans signature qui semblerait plus ancienne.

Dionysius the Elder (405-367 avant J.-C.)

During the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), Syracuse had to face on his land the dreaded Athenian expedition from 415 BC Nicias and Alcibiades. After the first recall, the Athenian fleet was sunk in the harbor of Syracuse and the Athenians were defeated on Assinarios in 413 BC, Nicias killed and the survivors of the Athenian army condemned to forced labor in stone quarries (latomie). In 409, the Carthaginians invaded the island again and seized Selinus and Himera and Agrigento in 405 BC Dionysius of Syracuse seized power and drives the invaders in 397 J .-C. reign of Dionysius lasted another thirty years and is Timoleon who succeeded him.
