SICILY - KINGDOM OF SICILY - FREDERICK II OF HOHENSTAUFEN

(1194-1250)

Frederick II (1194-1250), the son of Henry VI and Constance, succeeded his father in 1197. His mother died the following year. He became king of the Romans in 1212 and was crowned emperor in 1220. First married to Isabella of Aragon, daughter of Alfonso II of Aragon, Count of Barcelona and Provence, he fought during his reign against the papacy in Italy. Excommunicated several times, he succeeded in recovering Jerusalem for a very short period.
