Flan à l’argenture légèrement granuleuse. Exemplaire de style exceptionnel, tant au niveau du droit que du revers. Droit de style fin. Très beau portrait d’inspiration grecque. Patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets dorés, légèrement cristallisée

Obverse description : Quadrige galopant à gauche, conduit par un aurige, tenant le rênes et le kentron, couronné par Niké volant à droite.

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Reverse description : Tête féminine (Aréthuse ou Perséphone) diadémée à droite, les cheveux tirés en arrière, avec un collier, entourée de quatre dauphins ; un globule, dans le champ devant les dauphins.

Commentary

Poids léger. Mêmes coins que les exemplaires des musées de Berlin et du British Museum ainsi que l’exemplaire de Monnaies et Médailles 43, 12-13 novembre 1970, n° 54. Cinquième exemplaire signalé.

SICILY - PANORMOS

(405-380 BC)

We have little information on Panorme, the current Palermo, before the Carthaginian occupation of 409 BC. We know that it was one of the bridgeheads for the landing of the invaders in Sicily. Coinage seems to have started around 415 BC and gained importance from 405 BC. Panorme was a very important link in the Carthaginian system of penetration into Sicily in the 4th century BC The city was finally taken in 253 BC by the Romans during the First Punic War.
