Historical background

SICILY - KATANE

(after 212 BC)

Catania had been destroyed by the Syracusans in 404 BC and its population enslaved. The city never recovered. Nevertheless, Catania entered the era of Roman influence from 263 BC. Coinage seems to have resumed after the definitive occupation of Sicily in 212 BC. Catania became a Roman colony under Octavian and makes a fresh start in imperial times.
