Historical background

SICILY - Agrigento

(Sixth - fifth century BC)

Agrigento was founded in the sixth century BC by colonists from Gela. She was one of the most beautiful and prosperous cities of the south coast of Sicily. The city was a few kilometers from the sea at the confluence of two rivers, Akragas and Hypsas. The mint seems to begin around 550 BC under the rule of the tyrant Phlaris. Theron, tyrant of Agrigento, seized Himera in 482 BC He and Gelon of Syracuse won a brilliant victory over the Carthaginians at Himera in 480 BC which was release vise Carthage posed on the island. After the death of Theron in 472 BC Democracy was restored. In 413 BC, Agrigento was rather favorable to the Athenians against the Syracusans. The city was destroyed in 406 BC, during the Carthaginian invasion. It was however rebuilt, but never regained its former glory. The city found itself caught in the conflict between the Carthaginians and the Romans during the first two Punic (261-241 BC and 221-201 BC). The Romans took possession of Agrigento in 210 BC, during the conquest of Sicily.
