Il est clair que les études historiques concernant ce roi de France étaient lacunaires à l’époque de Thomas Bernard.
Raoul, aussi appelé Rodolphe (v. 890 - † 936), fut duc de Bourgogne (921-923) puis roi des Francs (923-936).
Raoul est un membre de la famille des Bivinides. Il est le fils de Richard II de Bourgogne dit Richard le Justicier, duc de Bourgogne et d'Adélaïde de Bourgogne, fille de Conrad II de Bourgogne. Il est le neveu de Rodolphe Ier de Bourgogne, de Charles II le Chauve et de Boson V de Provence. Sa mère était en effet la sœur du roi Rodolphe Ier de Bourgogne, son père était le frère du roi Boson V de Provence et de Richilde d'Ardennes qui fut concubine et seconde épouse de Charles II le Chauve. C'est le seul roi de France qui ne se rattache pas directement à l'une des trois grandes familles royales franques : les Mérovingiens, les Carolingiens et les Robertiens. Néanmoins, l'hypothèse a été avancée que Raoul pourrait se rattacher agnatiquement à la lignée de Jérôme (fils de Charles Martel) et donc appartenir à une branche collatérale des Carolingiens. C'est cependant lui, beau-frère du robertien Hugues le Grand et gendre du roi (robertien) Robert Ier, qui est élu roi des Francs.

However, the hypothesis has been put forward that Raoul could be agnatically related to the line of Jerome (son of Charles Martel) and therefore belong to a collateral branch of the Carolingians. Historical background
METALLIC SERIES OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE
This series was engraved by Thomas Bernard and is interrupted, for this author, with the token of Louis XIV. The following tokens are engraved by Nicolas Gatteaux for Louis XV, Duvivier for Louis XVI, Puymaurin and Gayrard for Louis XVII, Puymaurin and Depaulis for Louis XVIII. The series is often attributed to Jean Dassier on the faith of Forrer but he corrects his assertion in his volume VIII and confirms the archives of the Monnaie de Paris which specify that the series was commissioned by Monsieur de Launay. There are different issues, in copper or brass, of varying weights but consistent by series, the reverse dies are sometimes varied. The classification of kings is done according to ancient usage, in three successive races. We note the existence of a very rare token explaining the abbreviations that we have only seen in a brass series. The packaging of this series was in a wooden tube. It is of course very difficult to reconstruct it and it should be noted that the different tokens have very different rarities, having probably been bought piecemeal by the public, favoring the good kings. There is at least one series in silver, possibly apocryphal, completed up to Napoleon III with tokens for all successive regimes, including the Revolution and Napoleon I, see MONNAIES 28, n° 1395.
