Commentary

Louis V (born around 967 - died May 22, 987), was King of the Franks from March 986 to May 987. Son of Lothair and Emma, he was the last of the Carolingians, power passing to the Robertians.
In 982, in Vieux-Brioude (Haute-Loire, between Clermont-Ferrand and Le Puy), his father made him marry Adélaïde d'Anjou, who was almost twenty years older than his son.. Sister of Geoffroy Grisegonelle and the Bishop of Puy Guy d'Anjou, Adélaïde, also called Blanche, is the daughter of the Count of Anjou, Foulque II the Good. Already widowed twice, she married the Count of Brioude, Étienne de Gévaudan, then Raymond, Count of Toulouse.. This union was short-lived: the great age difference and the debauchery of the young husband were the cause of their divorce two years later..
On Whit Sunday, June 8, 979, his father Lothair associated him with the throne, and had him crowned at the Abbey of Saint-Corneille in Compiègne by Adalbéron, Archbishop of Reims.. His deceased father (March 2, 986), Louis V, only had time to summon an assembly of Franks at Compiègne. This court is to judge the Archbishop of Reims Adalberon, who supported Otto II in his quarrel against Lothair.. However, the day before the meeting, on May 22, 987, Louis V died from a fall from his horse during a hunting party on the lands of Hugh Capet in the Halatte forest near Senlis.. He is buried in the Abbey of Saint-Corneille in Compiègne.
The assembly which met the following June in Senlis chose a new king by electing Hugh Capet, eldest son of Hugh the Great..

Historical background

METALLIC SERIES OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE

This series was engraved by Thomas Bernard and is interrupted, for this author, with the token of Louis XIV. The following tokens are engraved by Nicolas Gatteaux for Louis XV, Duvivier for Louis XVI, Puymaurin and Gayrard for Louis XVII, Puymaurin and Depaulis for Louis XVIII. The series is often attributed to Jean Dassier on the faith of Forrer but he corrects his assertion in his volume VIII and confirms the archives of the Monnaie de Paris which specify that the series was commissioned by Monsieur de Launay. There are different issues, in copper or brass, of varying weights but consistent by series, the reverse dies are sometimes varied. The classification of kings is done according to ancient usage, in three successive races. We note the existence of a very rare token explaining the abbreviations that we have only seen in a brass series. The packaging of this series was in a wooden tube. It is of course very difficult to reconstruct it and it should be noted that the different tokens have very different rarities, having probably been bought piecemeal by the public, favoring the good kings. There is at least one series in silver, possibly apocryphal, completed up to Napoleon III with tokens for all successive regimes, including the Revolution and Napoleon I, see MONNAIES 28, n° 1395. This series is documented in a small book by Philippe Marinèche from whoever can acquire it, contact phmarineche@aol. com.
