Commentary
Louis IX de France, plus connu sous le nom de Saint Louis depuis sa canonisation par l'Église catholique romaine en 1297, est né le 25 avril 1214 à Poissy et mort le 25 août 1270 à Tunis pendant la huitième croisade. Il fut roi de France de 1226 à 1270, neuvième de la dynastie des Capétiens directs.
Il est le fils de Louis VIII (1187-1226), dit Louis le Lion, roi de France, et de Blanche de Castille (1188-1252). Il est aussi le frère aîné de Robert Ier d'Artois, comte d'Artois et de Charles Ier de Sicile (1227-1285), comte d'Anjou, qui fonda la seconde dynastie angevine.
Il développa notamment la justice royale où le roi apparaît alors comme « le justicier suprême ».
Quatrième fils né en 1214 du roi Louis VIII, Louis IX ne peut régner qu'en raison de la mort précoce de ses trois frères aînés dont Philippe né en 1209 et mort en 1218. Il n'a pas atteint la majorité lorsque survient le décès de son père en 1226.
Dans son testament, Louis VIII confie la régence à Blanche de Castille. Le pouvoir passe « entre les mains d’un enfant, d’une femme et d’un vieillard », Barthélemy de Roye, grand chambrier à la cour depuis 20 ans (Chronique de Tours).
Le royaume entre dans une période d'agitation, la révolte est organisée par Philippe Hurepel, oncle de Louis IX, fils légitimé de Philippe Auguste, par la maison de Dreux et par le duc de Bretagne Pierre Mauclerc. Matant la rébellion et les barons agités, la régente Blanche de Castille, achève la conquête du Languedoc initiée par Louis VIII en contraignant le comte Raymond VII de Toulouse à donner sa fille Jeanne en mariage à Alphonse, frère de Louis IX.

Historical background
METALLIC SERIES OF THE KINGS OF FRANCE
This series was engraved by Thomas Bernard and is interrupted, for this author, with the token of Louis XIV. The following tokens are engraved by Nicolas Gatteaux for Louis XV, Duvivier for Louis XVI, Puymaurin and Gayrard for Louis XVII, Puymaurin and Depaulis for Louis XVIII. The series is often attributed to Jean Dassier on the faith of Forrer but he corrects his assertion in his volume VIII and confirms the archives of the Monnaie de Paris which specify that the series was commissioned by Monsieur de Launay. There are different issues, in copper or brass, of varying weights but consistent by series, the reverse dies are sometimes varied. The classification of kings is done according to ancient usage, in three successive races. We note the existence of a very rare token explaining the abbreviations that we have only seen in a brass series. The packaging of this series was in a wooden tube. It is of course very difficult to reconstruct it and it should be noted that the different tokens have very different rarities, having probably been bought piecemeal by the public, favoring the good kings. There is at least one series in silver, possibly apocryphal, completed up to Napoleon III with tokens for all successive regimes, including the Revolution and Napoleon I, see MONNAIES 28, n° 1395.
