Historical background

SEPTIMIUS-SEVERUS

(13/04/193-4/02/211)

After the proclamation of Pescennius Niger in Antioch, Septimius Severus opened a new workshop, probably in Emesa, the city of Julia Domna, his second wife. After his victory over his unfortunate competitor, the resentful emperor closed the workshop of Antioch and opened that of Laodicea which had supported him against Niger who was finally defeated at Issos, in the fall of 194, and tried to take refuge among the Parthians. Caught up, he was beheaded at the end of 194 or at the beginning of the year 195. Septimius Severus, after having reestablished order in the East, recaptured Antioch and Byzantium and seized Osroene and Adiabene which he removed from Vologesis V (191-208).
