Exemplaire sur flan ovale bien centré au droit, un peu court au revers sur la légende. Belle tête de Septime Sévère. Revers de toute beauté avec de magnifiques têtes de Caracalla et de Géta. Patine de collection ancienne avec reflets dorés. Conserve une partie de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Commentary

Poids léger. De la plus grande rareté. En 1880, dans l’ouvrage d’Henry Cohen, Rollin et Feuardent cotaient ce denier 60 francs or soit le prix d’un aureus.

SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS, CARACALLA and GETA

Septimius Severus has two sons from his second marriage to Julia Domna: Caracalla, born in 188, and Géta, born in 189. The first becomes Caesar in 196 and Augustus in 198; the second was raised to the Caesarean in 198. From 201, we observe an important coinage of dynastic issues which will culminate with the return of the Emperor to Rome in 202. This return coincides with his decennalia and the marriage of Caracalla with Plautille . The highlight of this program will be the celebration of the Secular Games in 204. Coins with multiple portraits are extremely rare.
