Commentary
Cet exemplaire de la classe IV b a toutes les caractéristiques de la monnaie type, tant au droit, avec la tête complète sans ornement devant la bouche, qu'au revers, avec la légende complète et avec les annelets en début de légende. Au revers, il semble possible de discerner le tracé circulaire au compas qui dut être fait sur le coin pour préparer la gravure.
This Class IV specimen has all the characteristics of the coin type, both on the obverse, with the complete head without ornament in front of the mouth, and on the reverse, with the complete legend and with the annulets at the beginning of the legend. On the reverse, it seems possible to discern the circular compass tracing that must have been made on the die to prepare the engraving.

SENONES (Area of Sens)
(2nd - 1st century BC)
The Sénons, whose name means the sages or the elders, controlled a vast territory which extended between the south of Champagne and the north of Burgundy. Their main oppidum was Agedincum (Sens) which still retains the name of the ancient civitas today. They had several other oppida like Auxerre, Tonnerre or Avallon. Divona seems to have been the principal sanctuary of the Senones. Caesar had wintered six of his legions in 53 BC at Agedincum. Labienus, Caesar's lieutenant and legate, came to settle in the region of Sens between Gergovie and Alesia in order to control the roads and protect Caesar's armies from an attack from the Belgians or the Germans.
