Commentary

Historical background

SEIZURES OF LILLE, BRUGES AND GHENT

(1708-1709)

The year 1708 was marked by great defeats on the French side. On October 23, 1708, the fall of Lille after two months of siege and the capitulation of the citadel on December 9, 1708 were events marking the end of the reign of Louis XIV. The beginning of the year 1709 was just as catastrophic with in January 1709 the loss of Bruges and Ghent, in the hands of the French since July 5, 1708.
