Coments on the condition:

Exemplaire revêtu d’une très jolie patine grise uniforme. La frappe est décentrée sur un flan très légèrement irrégulier. L’usure est minime sur les reliefs mais de nombreux détails sont extraordinaires : la tête du cheval notamment, le costume du cavalier, les armes au revers

Commentary

Le demi-snaphaen de Jametz semble connu à quatre exemplaires : l’exemplaire illustré dans le Bulletin de Serrure avec CVRREN.SZ.VOLEN au droit provenant de Liège, un exemplaire Grote, 1836, pl.XIX n°280 avec CVRREN.SZ.VOLN et enfin ce type connu à deux exemplaires (Petit Séminaire de Saint-Trond et cet exemplaire).

LORDSHIP OF JAMETZ - JOHN OF LA MARCK

(1536-1560)

Fief since the 11th century, Jametz passed by marriage into the house of La Marck in 1449 through the marriage of Jeanne, daughter of Jean II du Saulcy with Robert I de La Marck, the future Duke of Bouillon. Their son Robert II de La Marck was lord of Jametz then his son Guillaume who died without an heir in 1529. The land of Jametz then went to his father Robert II and after the death of the latter in 1536 to his brother Jean. Until 1560, the reign of Jean is calm and prosperous, the city is fortified and develops. Jean de La Marck is also the younger brother of the powerful Robert III of Sedan thanks to whose protection he claimed the right to coinage. Manufactured species consist of snaphaen and half-snaphaen imitated from similar pieces from Liège and Gelderland.
