Commentary
In 1680, the Mercure Galant gave the following explanation for this setback: \\\"This shows that, just as bees always strive to follow their king, His Majesty's secretaries are ready at all times to receive orders from this great prince, who is, in a way, the head of their company\\\" (Mercure Galant, March 1680)

Historical background
KING'S SECRETARIES
Their function was quite similar to that of our current Secretaries of State. There is an excellent article on the subject online, taken from the Dictionnaire encyclopédique de la noblesse de France by Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais (1773-1842) — Paris, 1816 at http://www.blason-armoiries.org/feodalite -nobility/s/secretaries-of-the-king.htm.
