Historical background

SCRIBONIA

(62 BC)

Lucius Scribonius Libo is a follower of Pompey. His daughter marries Sextus Pompey, the second son of the great Pompey. Sent to Egypt in 56 BC to restore Ptolemy XII Auletes (the flute player) to the throne, he tries, in 49 BC, to temporize between Caesar and Pompey by trying to negotiate a truce . But Pompey fled to Greece with part of the senate. Scribonius commands part of Pompey's fleet at the time of Pharsalia's defeat. After Caesar's death, he still played a diplomatic role in the conflict between Octave and Marc Antoine in the Perugia War. Octave married Scribonia, daughter of Scribonius, thus enabling the reconciliation of Sextus Pompey and Octave in 39 BC. But Octave divorced the following year to marry Livia. After the death of his son-in-law Sextus Pompey (35 BC), he was consul with Marc Antoine in 34 BC..
