Hormizd II is the son of Narses whom he succeeds after the latter's abdication. The reign of this king was very chaotic, following the disastrous war between the Sassanids and the Romans. At the end of Hormizd's reign, his brother and one of his sons revolted and a civil war broke out. Finally, after the disappearance or flight of the various protagonists, it was the posthumous son of the king, Sapor II who succeeded him for the longest reign in Sassanian history, nearly 70 years..
