Commentary

Historical background

Sarmatia - Olbia

(Sixth - fifth century BC)

Olbia as Istros (Istrus) was a Milesian colony, located near the Borysthenes and Hypanis on the Euxine, equidistant from Tyra and Panticapaeum the Thracian Chersonese. Its prosperity came from its strategic geographical position between the Scythian tribes and the Euxine. It enjoyed its greatest economic expansion in the Hellenistic period. She was eventually taken by the barbarians in the third century AD.
