Commentary

Epigraph issue. This dolphin is a testimony at the border between Numismatics and Archaeology. Considered as pre-monetary, this type of object could have been used by Celtic populations in contact with the Greek world at a time when coin had not yet become established. Dimensions (length 21 mm; width 8 mm). On the obverse, our example also seems to bear an inscription with a visible fin. Examples with inscriptions are much rarer than anepigraphs. One of the only ones we offered made €275 on a maximum offer of €300 with thirteen orders in MONNAIES XXIV, n° 50

Historical background

SARMATIA - OLBIA

(6th - 5th century BC)

Olbia as Istros (Istrus) was a Milesian colony, located not far from Borysthenes and Hypanis on Pontus Euxin, equidistant from Tyra and Panticapaeum on the Chersonese of Thrace. Its prosperity came from its strategic geographical position between the Scythian tribes and Pont-Euxin. It experienced its greatest economic expansion in the Hellenistic period. It was finally taken by the barbarians in the 3rd century AD.
