Historical background

SANCTI Dionysii - SAINT-DENIS (Seine-Saint-Denis)

(Seventh - eighth century)

That, to 250, what buried Denis, the first bishop of Paris and martyr. To 475 St. Genevieve had enlarged the mausoleum stood above the grave of Denis. In the seventh century, during the reign of Dagobert I, the sanctuary has many privileges that will foster the development of an abbey. The basilica is chosen as a burial place by Dagobert and his family. She became an important center whose Merovingian Queen Bathilda is a monastery in 650. We also know that the first fairs were founded in 634 with the fair of Saint-Denis by Dagobert. Most of these shows are fairs wines. Wine is sold to foreign merchants in exchange for manufactured goods. At about 400 meters south-west of the basilica, was a dependent Merovingian cemetery of the church of Saint-Marcel, a burial in the ground contained currencies.
