Historical background

SAMNIUM - ÆSERNIA (Isernia)

(263-240 BC)

Latin colony, Aesernia was founded in 263 BC on the territory of Pentri, about thirty kilometers from Bovianum at the crossroads of roads joining Samnium and Lazio. During the Punic Wars, the city remained faithful to the Roman alliance. During the Social War, the city was captured by the Latins and was the ultimate center of resistance of the allies.
