Historical background

SAINT-OMER - SAINT-BERTIN'S CHURCH AND CONVENT

(1524-1526)

The Saint-Bertin church and convent in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais) was founded by Saint Omer, bishop of Thérouanne in the 7th century. Saint-Omer was the seat of a bishopric from 1559 to 1790. The church of Saint-Bertin struck a series of méreaux from 1524 to 1526. Such a practice, common in northern France, had also developed in Cambrai. The minting of these méreaux continued until the beginning of the 18th century with in particular the minting of méreaux of 12 deniers.
