Catherine (2/05/1729-17/11/1796) fut la plus grande tsarine après Pierre le Grand. Elle succéda à son mari, Pierre III, qui fut déposé en 1762 avant d'être assassiné par les frères Orloff. Son très long règne fit entrer la Russie dans le "Siècle des Lumières". Amie des philosophes dont Diderot à qui elle acheta sa bibliothèque, libérale, elle renforça néanmoins le despotisme et l'étatisation de la Russie. Elle lutta contre les Turcs et se montra une adversaire de la Révolution Française.
