Commentary
Gretna Green lies just beyond the old \\\"border\\\" between England and Scotland. Local law then permitted marriage with a simple declaration in front of witnesses... provided you were at least 16 years old and had resided there for at least 21 days before the wedding. Marriages were then celebrated by a local \\\"blacksmith priest,\\\" hence this symbol. Around 1940, the law allowing this was abolished. Nevertheless, some couples now legally perpetuate the tradition of these weddings, which are organized by the town.
