Commentary

Les monnaies de cuivre sont rares dans le monnayage mérovingien. Les seules vraiment bien classées sont celles de Marseille, avec un nom de roi. Il s’agit de l’un des plus beaux exemplaires conservés de cette série.
Copper coins are rare in Merovingian coinage. The only truly well-classified ones are those from Marseille, bearing the name of a king. This is one of the finest surviving examples of this series.

Historical background

MEROVINGIAN COINS - FRANKISH KINGDOM - CHILDEBERT I

(511-558)

Childebert is the son of Clovis and Clothilde. In 511, on the death of his father, the kingdom was divided between him and his three brothers, Thierry, Clodomir and Clothaire. Childebert inherited the lands located between the Seine and the Loire (Paris, Chartres, Le Mans). In 526, on the death of Clodomir, Childebert and Clotaire slaughtered their nephews to seize his inheritance. In 534, Clothaire and Childebert united and defeated the Burgundians near Autun. In 558 Childebert died childless and his estates were recovered by Clothaire.
