Historical background

KINGDOM OF SICILY - CHARLES I OF ANJOU

(1266-1282)

Charles (1226-1285) is the last son of Louis VIII and Blanche de Castille. He married in 1246 Béatrice, the daughter of Raymond V of Provence. He is count of Anjou, Maine and Provence (1246-1285), king of Sicily and Naples (1265-1285). The hatred of the French caused the Sicilian Vespers in 1282 and the loss of the island to the Aragonese, beginning of a conflict that was to last more than two centuries. From 1231 and the manufacture of augustals in gold by Frederick II of Hohenstaufen (1197-1250), the taro designates a coin of 16 carats and approximately 0.90 g.
