Historical background

KINGDOM OF MAURETANIA - ADHERBAL

(118-112 BC)

Adherbal is the grandson of Masinissa (202-148 BC) and the son of Micipsa (148-118 BC). On the death of Micipsa, his two sons Adherbal and Hiempsal shared his estate. A third, illegitimate son, Jugurtha, came to complicate the succession. The latter quickly had Hiempsal assassinated. Adherbal and Jugurtha then shared Mauretania. Adherbal received Eastern Numidia with Cirta. Jugurtha finally got rid of his half-brother and seized Cirta in 112 BC.
