Poids léger. Série à la grosse tête. D. Sear n’a pas retenu ce type dans son ouvrage (RCV 1) et le considère donc comme une monnaie coloniale.

Historical background

KINGDOM OF COMMAGENE - TIBERIUS

(19/08/14-16/03/37)

The kingdom of Commagene was created around 162 BC. Samosata, the capital, was founded by Samos between 140 and 130 BC between Cilicia and Syria Cyrrhestica. On the death of Antiochus III of Commagene, the kingdom was annexed by Tiberius (Tacitus, Annals II. 42). Caligula reconstituted the kingdom for the benefit of Antiochus IV Epiphanes (38-72), son of Antiochus III, friend of Caligula. Deposed by Caligula in 40, he was reinstalled by Claude. In 72, suspected of conspiring with the Parthians, he was again deposed and the kingdom of Commagene was attached to the Roman Empire while the last king spent his last years interned in Sparta, then in Rome.
