Historical background

KINGDOM OF BURMA - MINDON MIN

(1853-1878)

Mindon Min (1808-1878) was the tenth and penultimate king of Burma. In 1853, he overthrew his brother Pagan Min following the loss of Lower Burma to the British in 1852. Faced with the territorial ambitions of the United Kingdom, Mindon Min embarked on a modernization of the country in order to keep Upper Burma . He introduced the Kyatt, the first Burmese silver coin minted on a mechanical press. On his death in 1878, Thibaw Min succeeded him but had to abdicate following the 1885 invasion which ended in the annexation of Burma.
