Historical background

ACHAEMENID KINGDOM

(5th-4th century BC)

After the conquest of the kingdom of Lydia in 546 BC, Cyrus maintained the coinage of Croesus. It was only under Darius I that the king created a new silver coin, the shekel. The Persian mine contained 60 shekels of silver. The Persian gold daric was worth 60 shekels and kept the weight of the Lydian hemistater, approximately 5.40 g. As the daric weighed approximately 8.40 g, we have a Gold/Ar ratio, 1:13, very close to that established by the Lydians.
