Commentary

On connaît un type accompagné de la légende SARRASIN SVI VRAIE. Depuis les croisades, le païen sarrasin est entré dans le folklore populaire ; les têtes de sarrasins figurant sur les jetons sont en fait imitées curieusement de certains portraits d’’empereurs romains que les graveurs ont pu observer sur des monnaies antiques. Romains ou sarrasin, la tête pour l’homme médiéval est celle du “Païen” meurtrier du Christ.
